Separation is the process of separating the substances of a mixture by the differences between their physical properties.

Sorting is the simplest method best used to separate mechanical mixtures. Sorting is when you put parts of a mechanical mixture in to groups based on similar properties.

Floating is a method best used to separate lighter substances from heavier ones. If a mixture is poured in to a certain liquid, the lighter and less dense particles will float to the top and can be skimmed off.

Dissolving is a method used to separate mixtures which are normally very hard to separate. If there is a substance that easily dissolves in a solvent whilst the other one does not, the solvent can be poured in to the mixture. One of the substances will dissolve while the other one will not be affected by the solvent.
